The Four-Way Test: A Guide to Intentional Living and Leadership

At Connextions Foundation, we strive to build strong communities, foster lasting relationships, and inspire positive change. One of the guiding principles we live by is The Four-Way Test — a simple yet powerful tool that helps guide our decisions, actions, and interactions with others.

Originally developed by Herbert J. Taylor in 1932, The Four-Way Test has stood the test of time as a moral and ethical framework for decision-making. It’s a set of four questions that encourages individuals to reflect deeply on how their words and actions affect others and themselves.

Here’s a closer look at the Four-Way Test and how you can incorporate it into your daily life to become a more thoughtful and impactful leader.

The Four-Way Test: What It Is and Why It Matters

The Four-Way Test asks us to consider the things we think, say, and do through the lens of four fundamental questions:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

By keeping these questions top of mind, we’re empowered to live with integrity, transparency, and compassion. Let’s break each of these questions down to understand how they can positively influence our daily lives and decision-making processes.

1. Is it the TRUTH?

Truth is the foundation of trust. When we commit to honesty in all that we do, we build credibility and earn the respect of those around us. Speaking the truth not only fosters healthy relationships but also reinforces our own self-respect. At Connextions Foundation, we emphasize transparency with our partners, donors, and the communities we serve.

In everyday life, ask yourself:

Are my thoughts and words aligned with the truth? Am I being honest with myself and others?

By prioritizing truth, you establish a culture of trust in both personal and professional relationships.

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Fairness is about ensuring that our actions do not cause harm or disadvantage to others. It’s about equality and justice. Whether you’re making decisions that impact a small group or an entire community, fairness should always be a top consideration. At Connextions Foundation, we aim to create opportunities that are equitable and accessible to all, particularly for underserved youth.

When making decisions, reflect on whether your actions are creating balance and fairness:
Is this action treating everyone involved with respect and equality? Will this decision hurt or harm anyone?

Practicing fairness can prevent conflict and foster a more inclusive environment.

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

One of the most powerful things we can do in our lives is to build relationships based on mutual respect, goodwill, and understanding. The strength of our community depends on the quality of the relationships within it. By considering whether our actions foster goodwill, we contribute to a more connected and compassionate world.

At Connextions Foundation, we believe in the power of connection — not just professionally, but personally. Our programs are designed to build bridges between individuals, organizations, and communities.

Ask yourself:
Are my words and actions promoting harmony? Am I building positive relationships or creating divisions?

Building goodwill leads to stronger friendships, healthier partnerships, and a more supportive community.

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The ultimate goal of our actions should be to create a positive impact on the lives of others. When making decisions, consider whether your actions will be beneficial not just to you, but to everyone involved. This long-term perspective helps ensure that you’re creating outcomes that are sustainable, inclusive, and uplifting.

Connextions Foundation focuses on creating opportunities that benefit the entire community, especially the youth we mentor and support. Our efforts are aimed at creating lasting change that ripples out to benefit all who are touched by our programs.

Before acting, ask:

Does this action benefit just me, or does it benefit others as well? How can I make my decision more inclusive?

By ensuring your actions are beneficial, you can make a meaningful, long-lasting difference.

Why The Four-Way Test Matters for Leaders and Changemakers

The Four-Way Test isn’t just a set of questions — it’s a mindset. For leaders and changemakers, it provides a framework to ensure that our actions align with our values. It’s a way to hold ourselves accountable and to approach every decision with empathy, integrity, and consideration for others.

At Connextions Foundation, we integrate The Four-Way Test into everything we do. From planning community events to mentoring youth, this ethical guide helps us navigate challenges, resolve conflicts, and build trust with those we serve.

We encourage you to adopt this test in your personal and professional life, whether you’re leading a team, managing relationships, or making decisions that impact your family and community.
